A Hospital Designed for Light and Nature
Located in Bergen, Norway, the Barne- og ungdomssjukehuset (BUS) is a next-generation hospital inaugurated in 2016. Designed by KHR Arkitekter AS, Rambøll Arkitekter AS and pka ARKITEKTER AS, it covers 50,000 m² and stands out for its architecture that combines innovation, comfort, and a strong connection to nature.
To meet the project’s technical and aesthetic requirements, several specialists contributed, including John Holvik AS, Hole Glass AS and Bolseth Glass AS.
A Lively and Light-Filled Façade
The façade of BUS plays with colours, light, shadows, and lines to create an atmosphere that feels both vibrant and playful, perfectly fitting its role as a paediatric centre. Floor-to-ceiling glazed surfaces maximise natural daylight, significantly reducing the need for artificial lighting.
Innovative Technical Solutions
The project incorporated highly efficient façade and window systems. These solutions addressed the site’s specific challenges, such as high wind loads, whilst maintaining slim and elegant profiles. Stepped glass corners provide breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Optimised Indoor Comfort
Patient and staff comfort was at the heart of the design:
Integrated ventilation units for optimal air circulation
A mechanical solar shading system, discreetly built into the façade elements
Easy access to outdoor areas, promoting the health benefits of nature
Most rooms have direct access to the outdoors, enhancing the sense of openness and freedom, which is essential in a healing environment.
The Barne- og ungdomssjukehuset perfectly illustrates how modern healthcare architecture can combine technical performance, elegant design, and human well-being, whilst remaining closely connected to its natural surroundings.
